• What are the best information sources for intellectual property and asset (IPAM) processes and benchmarks? Waht are the "classic" case studies in IPAM? What are the best paractices in IPAM? Thanks, Steve

  • Thanks for the distinction. I mean systems of extracting maximum value from the strategic managment of the value generation process with IP: R&D invention generation process--> IP decision making --> IP portfolio managment --> monetizing/risk managing--> realizing corporate strategy So my question is more of a business system level question on how to maximize the return on investment in IP. IP is also used as a key risk management tool to protect the existing business that is very valuable. Hence there are defensive and offensive uses for IP. A big co might put 70 % of it's IP spending on protecting the core, 20% into growing the core into new markets and 10% into blue sky invention for break throughs. This would be an example of corporate strategy translated into IP portfolio management. I am looking for best cases and practices at this system level mostly for big companies. Some companies that may be the subject of this would be IBM, Proctor and Gamble, Honeywell, Cisco, Microsoft, GE, and 3 M for the big guys. Intellectual ventures for the early venture space. Top law firms are also worth looking at. I realy thought the links 1, 2, and 5 you provided were getting on target with comprehensive content. I am trying to get a broad and high level overview. Thanks p.s. what kind of word is oratices--sorry for the typo practices

  • Clarification: Subject: Best practices in intellectual property management

  • Hello dunus-ga, Your clarification helps a lot. I have a much better understanding of what you're looking for. Based on my preliminary research I can't tell how difficult it's going to be to unearth information that's on target for you. I will be back with you shortly. ~ czh ~

  • Hello dunus-ga, I hope that the information I?ve found for you about the current trends in Intellectual Asset Management will be helpful. I?ve sorted the materials into your three categories: Information Resources, Case Studies and Best Practices. In the course of the research I came across a lot of information about associations, organizations, portals, directories and publications that I thought might also be helpful so I?ve included these as well. There is growing interest in this field and many consulting companies now have a practice in IAM. I trust that the collection of resources I?ve found will meet your needs. All the best. ~ czh ~ =================================================== IPAM RESOURCES ? The Intellectual Property Network (as it was then called) was an initiative within IBM. In 1997, in response to the growing needs of individuals, organizations, and governments for more efficient methods of exploring intellectual property information, IBM made the network available to the public via the Internet. Delphion was spun out of IBM in 2000 and created as a wholly independent entity, incorporating the IBM Intellectual Property Network. Now, with its extensive data coverage ? collections from all over the world ? and value added functionality, it has evolved into one of the most comprehensive sources for finding and viewing patent information. Today... Delphion is part of the Thomson Corporation and ? along with other Thomson information solutions like Derwent and the Web of Science ? is one of the world's most popular online destinations for intellectual property and scientific research. Many of the original developers of the IPN are still leading innovation on Delphion today. ====================================== IPAM -- ORGANIZATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS ====================================== http://www.iipi.org/index.asp International Intellectual Property Institute (IIPI) ------------------------------------------------- http://www.aipla.org/ American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) ------------------------------------------------- http://www.ipo.org/ Intellectual Property Owners Association ------------------------------------------------- http://www.wipo.int/index.html.en World Intellectual Property Organization The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is an international organization dedicated to helping to ensure that the rights of creators and owners of intellectual property are protected worldwide and that inventors and authors are, thus, recognized and rewarded for their ingenuity. IP Assets and Enterprise Value IP assets are gaining ground as a measure of corporate viability and future performance. In 1982, some 62 percent of corporate assets in the United States were physical assets, but by 2000, that figure had shrunk to a mere 30 percent. At the beginning of the 1990s, in Europe intangible assets accounted for more than a third of total assets. As early as 1992, in the Netherlands, for example, intangible assets accounted for more than 35 percent of total public and private investments. A recent study shows that, on average, 40 percent of the value of a company is not shown in any way in its balance sheet. For this reason, IP is sometimes referred to as a "hidden value". Whether hidden or expressly valued, it is now clear that patents, s, trademarks, geographical indications and trade secrets are significant contributors to enterprise value. ------------------------------------------------- http://ipmall.info/hosted_resources/pubspapers/jorda_TIT_Symposium1.20.04.pdf http://ipmall.info/hosted_resources/pubspapers/jorda_APPENDIX.pdf Intellectual Property Management Strategies in US Corporations ***** This is an 8-page report and 3-page appendix on the results of the 2003 IPO Survey on Strategic IP Management. • Very tough search to do. Good job classifying and organizing key sources. Thanks

  • Hello dunus-ga, I?ve started researching your question and it?s become clear that the term ?Intellectual Property and Asset Management? or IPAM is used in two related but differentiated ways in the business press. The first application covers patent protection while the second has to do with intellectual capital (assets) in terms of knowledge management. Here are some articles to illustrate my point. Please tell me more about the context of your question so I know what kind of information you need.
