Patent Study Reveals Immersion's Innovation, Impact, and Leadership in Haptics Technology
November 19th, 2008 |SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb 26, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Immersion Corporation (Nasdaq: IMMR), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology (http://www.immersion.com/corporate/), announces that results of a study on patent impact, prepared by 1790 Analytics, show Immersion ranked first in Pipeline Originality, ahead of companies such as AT&T, Boeing, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Medtronic, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, and Xerox.
IEEE Spectrum magazine, which commissioned the study, selected 9 industry categories and published results of the top 20 companies in each of those industries (180 companies in total) from a dataset of more than 1,300 companies. In the overall rating of Patent Power, Immersion ranked 5 th in its industry category, Computer Peripherals and Storage, which also included Ricoh, Seiko Epson, Hitachi Global Storage, EMC, Konica Minolta, and Symbol Technologies. It ranked 46th in Pipeline Power among the more than 1,300 companies in the original dataset.
Immersion's rankings within its industry category and within the 180 top companies in IEEE Spectrum's published results were:
-- First in Pipeline Originality for its industry and first compared to the top 180 companies across 9 industries. This indicator measures the variety of technologies on which an organization's patents build, based on the concept that inventions created by combining ideas from several different technologies tend to be more original than those that make incremental improvements using the same technology.
-- First in Pipeline Generality for its industry and 17th compared to the top 180 companies. This indicator measures the variety of technologies that build on an organization's patents, based on the notion that patents cited by those in many different fields tend to have more general application than those cited by patents in the same field.
-- Second in Adjusted Pipeline Impact for its industry and 20th compared to the top 180 companies. This indicator measures how frequently an organization's patents from the previous 5 years were cited by patents issued in 2006, adjusted for self-citation. Pipeline Impact reflects both the extent to which an organization is developing its own technology and the impact of its technology on others in the industry.
-- Fourth in Pipeline Growth for its industry and 29th compared to the top 180 companies. This indicator measures an organization's patent activity.
"As the study shows, Immersion has a very strong spirit of innovation, even compared to much larger organizations," said Michael D. Levin, vice president of IP strategy. Levin is responsible for optimizing the creation and acquisition of IP assets, performing competitive analysis, and identifying strategic market opportunities and partnerships. "Our objective is to expand human-computer interface capabilities for a more intuitive, productive, and satisfying user experience, which will lead to high value and return on investment for our customers and licensees.
"Our patent portfolio is strong and relevant to products and applications across a broad range of industries including automotive, consumer electronics, entertainment, industrial controls, medical training, and wireless communications. It includes over 75 patent applications filed and over 50 patents issued in 2007, bringing our total to over 700 issued and pending patents. We are increasing our internal investment in research activities that can generate significant innovations for future growth. In addition, we are collaborating with research groups in universities and businesses to extend haptics technology and explore new applications."
